Grand Central Terminal, NYC: Ceiling mural conservation, preservation, and restoration in this National Historic Landmark

John Canning & Co. was chosen to conserve Grand Central Terminal’s Sky Mural following a rigorous selection process. Our main mission was to stabilize the existing finishes, remove the heavy buildup of soot and grime created by the exhaust of the train engines, and most importantly, not cause any additional damage to the object. Prior to any restoration efforts, our staff spent several weeks developing an aqueous cleaning agent that would successfully clean the surface without damaging the finish. Areas of loss were in painted and gilded where necessary.
