Stadium Theatre, Woonsocket, RI: Preservation research, plaster and painted decoration restoration of this National Landmark

John Canning & Co. acted as a consultant for historic finish exposures and paint analysis, as well as the General Contractor for Stadium Theatre. This included coordinating all work and trades for the restoration of the Adamesque style interior of the building, and executing a mural. John Canning & Co. worked to uncover all original designs and recreated each pattern, motif, and portrait using artists’ oils. All plaster was stabilized, consolidated, and repaired, and the proscenium was re-gilded. Techniques included: documentation, cleaning, conservation, in-painting, freehand artwork, stenciling, gilding, striping, glazing, trompe l’oeil, and plaster stabilization and consolidation. The restoration project won the State Historic Preservation award in 2002 from the Rhode Island Historical Preservation & Heritage Commission.
