John Canning & Co. re-gilded the West Virginia State Capitol exterior dome with 23.75K gold leaf. The dome had a history of failing gold leaf. For this restoration, it was decided that all coatings were to be removed down to the dome substrate, and new coatings applied. Canning prepared, sized and applied gold leaf to the specified ornament. The work was finished in four months, eight months ahead of schedule. The building was designed by Cass Gilbert who patterned the dome after that of the Palace des Invalides.
