Even though it was a difficult year we wanted to take a look back from the John Canning & Co. side at some of the positive highlights from 2020.  Highlights include awards and a few of the projects the John Canning & Co. team were involved in.

Awards

With over 40 years in the historic restoration profession, John Canning & Co. has received many awards for our restoration, conservation and preservation work across the country.  We were honored to received multiple awards in 2020.

2020 Heritage Ohio Best Public Building Rehabilitation Award
The Fulton County Courthouse, Wauseon, OH

The Fulton County Commissioners earned the 2020 Heritage Ohio Best Public Building Rehabilitation Award for the Fulton County Courthouse project. For this rehabilitation project, John Canning & Co. performed restoration and preservation work on the historic Common Pleas Courtroom.

2020 ABC Connecticut, Excellence in Construction Award
The Church of St. Michael the Archangel Restoration and Renovation Project, Pawcatuck, CT

John Canning & Co. main work on this project included historic stencil over the dado and surrounding windows in the Nave & Transept Walls, redesigning of Frieze Border and Stripes, designing and installing medallions.

2020 Preservation Connecticut Award of Merit
First Congregational Church of West Haven, West Haven, CT

For the First Congregational Church of West Haven, Canning performed a conditions assessment of the plaster ceiling then performed plaster consolidation, stabilization and restoration.

2020 Project Team Award, Higher Education (Small) First Place
The Digital Humanities Lab Sterling Memorial Library, Yale University Project, New Haven, CT

For this Yale Sterling Memorial Library project, John Canning & Co. performed historic wood finishes conservation, conservation cleaning and finished new replacement millwork to match the existing millwork.

Projects

Every year John Canning & Co. works on many great projects for both public and private structures across the country. Our expertise and years of experience, combined with our deep respect for historic architecture and interior design, enables clients to entrust us with restoring state capitol buildings and landmark courthouses, churches, libraries, educational buildings, museums, theaters, and so on.  We have been privileged to work on some of the nation’s most visible and important historic buildings. Below are a few of the project highlights from 2020.

Old Steinway Building: 111 West 57 Street

For the original landmarked building Steinway Hall, where the famed Steinway & Sons housed its iconic collection of pianos for many years, John Canning & Co. was brought in by JDS Development for the art conservation of the ceiling artwork, and the restoration of the architectural paint finishes in the historic rotunda, adjacent vestibules, and upper and lower elevator lobbies, as well as the plaster features.

Old Steinway Building: 111 West 57 Street

Washington DC’s Union Station

As anyone who has ever visited the National Historic Landmarked Union Station in Washington, D.C., knows, the station and all who travel through it are overlooked by 46 massive plaster statues which were modelled after ancient Roman soldiers, also called Legionnaires. The project started in 2019 and continued with additional work in 2020. The overall work included the conservation and restoration of the Legionnaire statues overlooking the main hall in historic Washington Union Station as well as some Legionnaire statues along the exterior and painting of grilles.

Fox Theatre

Canning completed two projects at the National Landmark Fox Theatre in 2020. The two different projects consisted of the plaster consolidation for the Open-Air Ticket Lobby Ceiling & Plaster Hexagon Panels and the Conservation Cleaning of the canopy above the balcony in the Fox Theater Auditorium to remove surface grime.

North Carolina State Capitol

Canning’s scope of work for this National Historic Landmark included paint conservation faux bios and faux granite painting as well as some plaster restoration.

Henry Ford Estate

For the home, one of the first historic sites to be designated a National Historic Landmarked “Fair Lane” estate, Canning conservation cleaning all woodwork on the first and second levels of the Main Hall including the wood paneling, decorative wood railings, doors, and features.

Yale Schwarzman Center

Over the years, John Canning & Co. has worked on many projects at Yale University. One of the 2019 into 2020 Yale projects included work at the Schwarzman Center. Our conservators and conservation technicians performed masonry conservation, ornamental plaster conservation, conservation of wood finishes, mosaic stabilization and assessment, and some conservation cleaning of various elements.

Langham Hotel

Canning has been a part of the transformation of the National Landmark Langham Hotel in Boston. This project involves gold leaf and silver leaf gilding throughout various spaces in the hotel including the New Ballroom, Club Lounge, The Wyeth, Read Lobby and Chairman Suite.  Canning was also contracted for mural consultation at the Langham.

As we look back, we have to take a moment to extend our thanks to all those that are a part of the Canning family that make it possible to successfully complete projects and make the company what it is today. We also have to thank those who have supported the company including the owners, architects, contractors and engineers that helped do their part. It’s a team effort to make a project come together and have a successful outcome and are appreciative to be surrounded by great team members for the projects we undertake.  We look forward to the year ahead and all that it may bring.

The decorative finish work John Canning & Co. performed included treatments on ornamental moldings ornately, conservation of murals, as well as decoratively hand-painted metal window valances and dado borders.

The Mark Twain House & Museum Restoration

Our conservation artists refinished the historic woodwork throughout the house, plaster restoration, and reproduced wallpaper of the Mark Twain House.
