John Canning & Co. Earns The Clem Labine’s Traditional Building 2019 Palladio Award For Craftsmanship

Cheshire CT, June 2019: John Canning & Co. earned the Palladio Award for the conservation and restoration work performed on the Luzerne County Courthouse in Wilkes-Barre, PA.  The Clem Labine’s Traditional Building 2019 Palladio Award For Craftsmanship comes after winning the 2018 Trumbauer Award for the courthouse restoration.  John Canning & Co. conserved and restored all aspects of the historic fabric of the courthouse.

The Palladio Awards Produced by Traditional Building, Period Homes and the Traditional Building Conference, honors outstanding achievement in traditional architectural design.  This award looks at the creative interpretation and adaptation of classical and traditional design principles performed on the buildings.  Principals John Canning and David Riccio will be accepting the award at the Traditional Building Conference in July.

John Canning & Co. performed assessments, stabilization, conservation and restoration of all the interior artwork and finishes at the majestic Luzerne County Courthouse. The project included the conservation of 125 murals, reinstatement of original decoration, ornamental plaster restoration, stabilization and repair, architectural gilding as well as marble, wood, and bronze restoration. This project was completed on time and on budget.

The Luzerne County Courthouse was originally built and opened to the public in 1909, and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. It stands as a monument to the importance and prosperity of the area during the historic coal and railroad industrial revolutions.
