The Belmont Chapel in Newport, Rhode Island, called on John Canning & Co. to renew its artistic legacy. John Canning & Co. provided consulting services, including finalizing the overall scheme, designing and fabricating patterns, doing decorative treatments on the south and west doors, performing polychrome moldings, installing four urns on canvas, and consulting on ceiling wood refinishing/matching.

One significant detail Canning focused on was decorative paint. Canning restored the sanctuary with white lilies on blue walls instead of its previously all-white paint, alluding to the same design in Paris’ Notre Dame. The team also brightened the borders surrounding the pointed arch and matched the colors to revitalize W. & G. Audsley’s palette. These colors included dark red, brown, and black to make the nave seem higher without feeling empty; the delicate colors along the arches and windows inside the sanctuary were also lightened, making them feel less cluttered and overwhelming.
